Memorial Day Ceremony 2017

by John Vogt - May 30, 2017

Today on The Home Page Network we reflect on Memorial Day as we highlight the ceremony that took place in Wellsboro, PA, yesterday May 29th. This gathering represents thousands of services and ceremonies that took place throughout our nation as we said, thank you, and remembered those who have paid the ultimate price.

First, we gathered on The Green in Wellsboro where Home Page had the opportunity to talk with several people participating in this moving event. Veteran, Tony Straniere said that he was present to honor those who were not able to be here because of the ultimate sacrifice. Scout Master Bill Colton shared about the special responsibilities that the Scouts had during the ceremony. Bonnie Rogers expressed the importance of teaching our children about our flag and what this day truly represents. And Bob Blair talked with us about one of his fondness memories. Bob has spent countless hours with his camera capturing endearing moments in our community.

Then we marched down Main Street to the cemetery where Master of Ceremonies Capt. Frank Yungwirth opened the event. Chaplain James Truax presented both the opening and closing prayers. We watched with gratefulness as the riderless horse crossed before us. We saluted the POW/MIA flag. Wellsboro Boy Scouts raised the American flag in honor and respect for those who have fallen. And, the Wellsboro High School band touched our hearts with a musical tribute.

Our featured speaker this year was Lt. Col. Joe Rawson who presented a heartfelt and powerful message in honor of those who have given their all. Lt. Col. Rawson said that those we honor came from all walks of life and all shared fundamental qualities that make our nation great. He said that they embodied courage, pride, determination, selfless, dedication to duty, and great personal integrity.

Col. Eldon Cummings spoke to us about the history of the holiday which was followed by a solemn moment where we all paid special honor and respect to our Gold Star families.

In closing Home Page anchor Johanna Renee Vogt closed the broadcast with the most important thank you of all. Johanna thanked God our heavenly Father for sending his son to die in the ultimate battle of good over evil winning for us the greatest victory of all – forgiveness of our sins and eternal life through Jesus Christ.

We hope that you will take a few moments to watch today’s broadcast and always be grateful for those who have given their lives in service to these United States of America.
