Meet the Candidates: Miss North Penn-Mansfield & Miss New Covenant

by Sara Vogt - June 13, 2024

Our community is excited to celebrate the 82nd Pennsylvania State Laurel Festival in Wellsboro. This cherished tradition is a testament to our community’s spirit and unity. A highlight of the event is the participation of young, talented women who ride the floats in the Laurel Festival Parade, representing over thirty schools.

Save the dates for a weekend brimming with anticipation! On Friday at noon, the queen candidates will be warmly welcomed on the steps of the historic Wellsboro Courthouse, located at 118 Main Street. Later, at 5:00 pm, you can catch a glimpse of the candidates on the outdoor stage of the Deane Center. Don’t miss the opportunity to secure a spot along the parade route on Saturday at 2:00 pm to witness the candidates ride the floats for the Laurel Festival Parade, a moment of immense pride for our community.

The judges will spend time with the candidates, deciding who will be the 2024 Pennsylvania State Laurel Queen.

Prepare for the grand finale of our festival, the coronation ceremony, a truly momentous event that will take place on Saturday at 6:30 pm in the prestigious auditorium at the Wellsboro Area School District Administration Building, located at 227 Nichols St. This is the culmination of a week filled with festivities, where our new queen will be crowned, marking a new chapter in our community’s history. Remember to grab your coronation tickets at the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce office at 114 Main St., Wellsboro, and at the auditorium’s door.

In Part Two of the interview, the queen candidates included Miss New Covenant, Natalie Heck, and Miss North-Penn Mansfield, Tessa Mitchell. Their stories are below, written in their own words.

In Natalie’s Own Words:
I graduated from New Covenant Academy, where I have attended since pre-school. I am a March Creek Fellowship Baptist Church member and play the violin on the worship team. You will find me in the produce department at Weis. I have worked there for the past year and plan to continue working there and to be an assistant soccer and volleyball coach at New Covenant Academy this coming year. I enjoy helping others, working, and gardening.

In Tessa’s Own Words:
My family has always been very important to me. I am the youngest of three siblings: a brother, Casey, and a sister, Matthea. Throughout my high school years, I have strived to be very involved in my school. I was vice president of my class and the National Honor Society president. I was also a member of Steam Team, Seniors to Seniors, Elementary School tutoring, and the track team for four years.
Along with academics, I prioritized being a strong leader in these organizations. In my free time, I enjoy reading, golfing, and baking – mostly chocolate chip cookies. In the fall, I will be attending St. Bonaventure University, majoring in Early Childhood Education. I am extremely honored and grateful to have been chosen to represent my community as Miss North Penn Mansfield, and cannot wait for the Laurel Festival!.
