McRoberts’ Hat Trick Powers Lady Trojans Past Wellsboro, 5–2

by Wyatt Wood - September 4, 2025

Fans were treated to a thrilling matchup Wednesday evening as the Wellsboro Lady Hornets hosted the Troy Lady Trojans in a high-energy soccer showdown. The back-and-forth battle kept spectators on edge, but it was Troy’s Alexis McRoberts who stole the show, netting an incredible hat trick to secure a 5–2 victory for the Lady Trojans.

The action started midway through the first half when Wellsboro freshman Haylie Smith made her mark early. Reading a short pass perfectly, Smith beat a defender and drilled a shot off the far post to give the Lady Hornets a 1–0 lead.

Troy didn’t stay quiet for long. Ten minutes later, Giana Renzi sliced through Wellsboro’s defense before dishing the ball to McRoberts, who buried it in the upper ninety to tie the game 1–1 heading into halftime.

Right out of the break, Troy struck again. After an opening drive stalled, Kyah Renzo fed McRoberts inside the box for her second goal, putting the Lady Trojans ahead 2–1. Moments later, a clean give-and-go between Renzi and McRoberts extended Troy’s lead to 3–1.

Wellsboro showed resilience late. With 19 minutes left, Jadyn Dunlap launched a deep free kick that bounced perfectly for Smith, who capitalized with her second goal of the night, cutting the deficit to 3–2.

But the Lady Trojans had an answer — and her name was McRoberts. Two minutes later, Renzi connected with McRoberts once more, completing the hat trick and pushing Troy’s lead to 4–2.

The dagger came with 11 minutes remaining when Saydi Renzo delivered a massive throw-in past midfield, where McRoberts controlled the ball and blasted home her fourth goal of the game with her left foot.

When the final whistle blew, Troy walked away with a 5–2 win, powered by McRoberts’ incredible offensive performance.

Both teams return to action this Saturday, September 6th. Wellsboro travels to Williamson for a 10:00 a.m. kickoff, while Troy heads to Wyalusing to face the Lady Rams at 1:00 p.m.
