Mansfield Highlights:08/06/18 – 08/10/18

A week of Home Page feature highlights!

by Home Page Staff - August 11, 2018

The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

Kids Broadcasting Day at Peggy’s!
This past Saturday, August 4, 2018, was KIDS BROADCASTING DAY at Peggy’s Candies and Bake Shoppe. The kids had the opportunity to experience both sides of the mic by interviewing a number of (VIPs) very important people as well as being interviewed themselves.

There were lots of giggles, prizes for new upcoming broadcasters, and free ice cream compliments of Peggy’s. Kids had the opportunity to read the teleprompter, deliver commercials on camera, interview guests, and yes, eat their fill of candy if mom and dad would let them.

The Art of Tinsmithing
Tinsmith, Michael Felk, is sharing this fascinating history at the fair this week. His masterful grasp of the events that originated the tin trade is presented in an interactive demonstration, in which he creates a product/tool right before your eyes. The knowledge and information he shares, along with his trade expertise, create a captivating experience. The original tools that are used in his demonstration give an accurate depiction of how a tinsmith of the past created goods. In addition, Michael encourages participation from the crowd as he invites them to guess what he is making and what authentic tin items were used for. Those who make it through the rounds of questions are rewarded with a handmade tin product of their choice! (Michael hand creates this prize for you personally.)

The Grange & 4-H Tour!
The 4-H building includes the culmination of projects from the past year by our area 4-H and FFA clubs. Fair attendees can also bid on prizes and prize baskets in the Silent Auction! Tioga County businesses and organizations have donated items to this event, with all proceeds benefiting the Tioga County 4-H program. Bidding closes on Friday, so mark your calendar and stop by the building frequently!

The Grange building features projects, arts, crafts and a variety of foods and produce that area residents have submitted for judging. From garden-grown vegetables, to homemade quilts, painting, photography, pies, jams, and more – there is a lot of hard work and talent packed into the venue.

Family Day at the Tioga County Fair!
Wednesday, August 8th was Family Day at the Tioga County Fair, and some of our youngest Home Page correspondents were there to catch the action. Activities began at 10:00 AM. Attending families appreciated the free admission for those under 11 years old until 5:00 PM.

There are lots of rides again this year, and our Home Page team was eager to try as many as possible. This task was all in the line of duty of course. Hannah found a favorite horse on the merry-go-round, and Sidney landed on those swings that go round and round and round. Kids enjoyed giant slides, spinning wheels, and more. And the food? Well, the food is always out of this world.

A Feast Fit for a Fair!
Fair week has countless aspects to look forward to! Some of the main draws, of course, are the animals, rides, concerts, and presentations. But, few attractions can trump the delicious fair food we get to enjoy during the week! Options from sweet to savory, along with yummy and refreshing drink options, are spread out throughout the fair grounds.

Home Page had the great pleasure of visiting a few of the vendors to check out what they’re serving up. While these scrumptious menus are solid options, we only chipped the tip of the tasty, fair-food ice burg! There are two more days to do some taste testing at the Tioga County Fair. Don’t miss these good eats!
