Baker Accepts Presidential Appointment
Rep. Matt Baker (R-Tioga/Bradford/Potter) announced he will be resigning from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives effective today, Monday, Feb. 19. The decision comes after the 25-year House veteran was offered a presidential appointment to serve his country.
“It is with great sadness that I am leaving the House of Representatives sooner than I would have desired; however, I have been given the opportunity to serve the people of the 68th District and beyond in an even greater capacity than my current position allows,” said Baker. “I am honored to have been offered this opportunity and feel it is the right time in my career to make the transition.”

On the Radar – Don’t Get Scammed!
It’s tax season, and with that comes a new round of IRS tax scams. But, as the public becomes more aware of these scams, the criminals try new tactics to get us to part with our hard-earned money.
Legitimate IRS requests are typically made via US Postal Service. Only after several notices by mail without response would they send an IRS agent to your home or business. If they do arrive in person, they will have proper ID and a phone number you can call to verify their business.

Prayer Rally
This Sunday, February 25, 2018, we have the opportunity to come together as a regional community and pray. If there was ever a time to make an all-out effort to be at a critical local event this Sunday night is the night. Drug abuse is a growing problem in our area as the death toll continues to rise. Parents and students are invited to attend a community-wide prayer rally concerning the opioid crisis in Tioga County.

TAVR: Reimagining Heart Surgery
As we age, our aortic valve is subject to wear and tear. Over time, the heart muscle can thicken, preventing an adequate flow of oxygen-rich blood to the body and creating congestion in the lungs.
This narrowing of the aortic valve, called aortic stenosis, is a common and serious heart valve problem. Without treatment, it has a prognosis worse than most cancers. Fortunately, valve replacement can reverse the effects of aortic stenosis, relieve symptoms and return life expectancy to normal. But for 40-60 percent of patients, replacement was previously not an option because they were considered too frail or aged to withstand traditional open heart surgery.
Typically, the demands of open heart surgery are too risky for patients in their late 80s – 90s and in those who have severe pulmonary disease or a history of previous heart operations. Now, there’s an FDA-approved, minimally invasive procedure called transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) that provides medical teams with an effective treatment for high-risk patients.
