Mansfield Highlights: 08/14/17 – 08/18/17

by Home Page Staff - August 19-20, 2017

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

The Hometown Science Festival
The Hometown Science Festival took place on Saturday, August 12th on The Green. This event featured a variety of hands-on, educational activities for children and adults to learn more about science and how it is involved in our daily lives. The Hometown Science Series and Festival was created last winter by a group of 6 individuals from the Northern Appalachian Research Lab in Asaph and the Tioga County Conservation District as a way to communicate science to the general public in a fun, informative way.

Women’s Self Defense Training
Fortunately, there are resources available here in our community to address this need. Vince Nance, who has an extensive background in self-defense training, cares passionately about providing women’s self-defense workshops. He recognizes that there is a societal reality of violence that we cannot ignore. Although we would like to believe that violence is not present in our neighborhoods, evidence indicates that the problem is here. According to The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV), “There are 50 rape crisis centers in Pennsylvania that serve more than 30,000 victims each year. There are also 60 domestic violence centers that serve nearly 90,000 victims yearly.”

UPMC Susquehanna – Emergency Dept.
Now celebrating the fifth anniversary of its relocation and grand opening, the emergency department at SSMH has served as a model for other facilities expanding or renovating their emergency services, with medical staff from around the state traveling to Wellsboro to review the layout. Designed with input from its emergency care providers to maximize efficiency and decrease wait times, the ED sits on the first-floor of a two-story 18,454 square foot expansion. As construction neared completion, a cornerstone ceremony was held on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 to commemorate the new ED, 70 years to the day from the setting of the original hospital cornerstone in 1941.

Like Home Away From Home
Recently, Heather and her family purchased a bed and breakfast, known as “Wellsboro Inn on the Green.” Owning the Inn had always been a dream of theirs, and through this, the family hopes to provide a positive light to the community. This ideal location puts their guests in the middle of downtown Wellsboro, providing the opportunity to explore this quiet, friendly community. The well-known Wynken, Blynken, and Nod landmark centered on The Green, can be seen and heard from various locations around the property, which is one of the reasons this location is so special.

Back to Basics – Fences
They say, “good fences make good neighbors.”
Fences are intended to keep some distance between you and whatever lies on the other side. On a recent trip to Wyoming I was very appreciative of the fence that separated me from a large bull. But, we don’t always appreciate fences. Some are more like a barrier that stands in our way.
Friend, God’s purpose is not to fill your life with barriers — it is to set you free! Life on the other side of the fence may seem good for a season, but it will lead you to eternal tragedy. Would you turn from your sin today and trust Christ as your Savior. If you have questions about what it means to follow Christ I’d love to talk with you. You can email me at tj@wellsborohomepage.com.
