Mansfield blows past Wyalusing

by Ed Weaver - January 9, 2019

A 21-point second quarter, capped off by 4 three-pointers led the North Penn-Mansfield Lady Tigers to a 62-35 win over Wyalusing in NTL cross-over action on Tuesday, January 8.

The Lady Tigers were hot behind the three-point line all night. As a team they hit 11 total, out of 23 attempts, and shot 43% from the field.

“When we can hit 11 three’s we can beat just about anybody,” head coach Jason Dominick said. “We really had confidence on offense and trusted ourselves, shared the basketball, and we shot really well. Ultimately with us it starts for us on the defensive end of the ball. We held them to 35 points, we forced a ton of turnovers, and we really started the game by setting that tone.”

North Penn-Mansfield started off the game with a 16-8 first quarter behind three three-pointers, one each by JoAnne McNamara, Jeanette Montefusco, and Lizzi Welch. The Tigers really did their damage in the second quarter. Mansfield outscored the Lady Rams 21-12 behind four more three’s, two each by Welch and Emma Palmer. Once the first half ended Mansfield built a 37-20 lead.

In the second half Mansfield built their lead to 49-29 after the third quarter then held Wyalusing to just 6 fourth quarter points to finish off the 62-35 victory.

McNamara led all scorers with 22 points, Welch finished with 16 and Palmer had 12. Jaime Palmer had 12 rebounds and 9 steals and Hannah Bowens had 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Emily Champluvier led Wyalusing with 10 points.

The win improves the Lady Tigers’ record to 7-2 overall (4-2 NTL Small School Division). Mansfield travels to Williamson on Thursday, January 10.
