Live from the Hive – S.T.E.M. & Robots!

by John Vogt - February 7, 2017

Today on Wellsboro Home Page we feature our first edition of Live From the Hive with Dr. Brenda Freeman, Superintendent of the Wellsboro Area School District. Today’s broadcast was recorded at the Rock L. Butler Middle School and focuses on the STEM program.

Wellsboro area teachers recently had the opportunity to host a special STEM workshop with other school districts to showcase the accomplishments that our Wellsboro students have made regarding the program. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Dr. Freeman’s first guest was Denise Route who is the Computer and Information Technology teacher at Rock L. Butler Middle School. Denise outlined some of the topics the Wellsboro area students where able to explore in the STEM program, including robotics and computer coding. This is unusual exposure for most middle school students and will hopefully reap great benefits for them in the future.

Dr. Freeman’s next guest was Matt Erway, the Technology Education Teacher at Rock L. Butler Middle School. Matt teaches in the shop area, giving the students the opportunity to utilize their technology skills in their hands-on projects.

The second half of today’s broadcast presents a few of the student’s projects in action. These projects include amazing robots made by eighth grade students Jessie Edwards, Jonathan Wetzel, and Will Poirier.

We also get a look at the Maker Space. You don’t want to miss this informative and encouraging broadcast feature with Dr. Brenda Freeman. We invite you to look for future Live From the Hive broadcasts located under our special features channels on our left navigation bar. Thanks for watching and thanks for making Wellsboro Home Page your Home Page.
