Little League District Champs!

by Ryan Campbell - July 10, 2017

Wellsboro’s Little League Major All-Star team captured the Pennsylvania District 15 title with a 4-0 victory over Tunkhannock on Sunday, July 9th.

Wellsboro mowed through the District Playoff bracket; going 4-0, scoring 44 total runs, and giving up just 10 runs in those four games.

The offense was in business early. In the bottom of the first inning, leadoff batter Connor Adams hit a pop fly that dropped in for a single. Adams would then advance to third, which set up a Darren Callahan RBI single to right field, giving Wellsboro the early 1-0 lead.

Wellsboro would pad on to their lead during their next at-bats in the second. After Will Kibler reached on a fielder’s choice, Brody Morral roped an RBI triple to the left field fence, scoring Kibler, and giving Wellsboro a 2-0 lead. Morral would score on the next at-bat as Adams hit a fly ball to left field deep enough for Morral to tag and beat the throw to extend the lead to 3.

Tunkhannock found a little offensive life in the top half of the third after their starting second baseman, Demarco, hit a double down the right field line to put runners on second and third with one out. However, Wellsboro’s Cameron Brought was dialed in and struck Tunkhannock’s Brown and Paduck back-to-back to get out of the jam.

Tunkhannock threatened again in the top of the fourth inning, this time loading the bases with one out. Once again, Brought and the Wellsboro defense got out of the inning without any damage after another strikeout and a pop out to second baseman, Peyton McClure.

Wellsboro added a little more insurance in the bottom of the fourth. With Connor Adams on third, a wild pitch was thrown and Adams scored to make the score 4-0. Wellsboro would shut down the Tunkhannock offense the rest of the way to seal the District Championship.

“This win feels good, mainly because we lost to them in districts two years ago, and now we have come back and won it and it feels very good to be able to finally do that,” said Cameron Brought after the game.

Head Coach Steve Adams was asked what is so special about this team. “We have eleven players on the team. Every one of them is good enough to start. We can’t start all of them but those kids stay as a team. They have really understood and grasped what it takes to be a teammate. I’m not sure I have been around a group that embodies that as much as these kids do.”

Brought threw a complete game shutout for Wellsboro giving up 6 hits. Wellsboro had 5 hits on offense with RBI’s from Darren Callahan, Brody Morral, and Connor Adams.

Wellsboro will be moving on to the Section 3 Tournament to face off against Upper Dauphin, Saturday, July 15th at 2pm at a site to be determined in District 24.
