Learn, Discover, Do!
Scouting is learning by discovery, and discovery by doing. Scouting is where skills are learned, confidence built, and stories are born. Sarah Vickery had the opportunity to speak with den leader, Josh Long about the Boy Scouts of America. Long grew up scouting and received the highest honor in scouting – eagle scout. He is currently the den leader of his son’s pack.
Scouts get to participate in many fun, skill & character building activities, including field trips to historical sites, police headquarters, fire departments and more. Scouts also hold pinewood derby competitions where the boys build their own wooden cars and race them against other scouts. Other activities include archery, rock climbing, push-mobile races and more!
Sarah was also accompanied by cub scouts Justin Gordon and Ian Long. Ian remarked that the annual pinewood derby is a highlight of scouting and displayed the cars he built. Justin expressed his love of scout camp and recommended everyone to join. All boys in grades 1-5 are eligible to join cub scouts. Boy scouts receive boys from grade 6 to 18 years of age.
