Laurel Festival – The Sounds of Summer!
Let the Games Begin!
Although Laurel Festival activities have already begun, this past Wednesday was The “Almost World Famous” Wellsboro Town Band’s first seasonal concert on the Wellsboro Green. This concert marked the first, of a four concert series over the summer, with the last three performances happening every other Wednesday (June 28th, July 12th, and July 26th). They opened up with the National Anthem, followed by The Pledge of Allegiance. From there, symphonic melodies filled the air with some familiar tunes, like music from Pirates of the Caribbean. The concert was a great tribute to the community.
If you have not attended a concert, yet, don’t miss your chance to listen to some real local talent. The band includes volunteers who enjoy bringing tunes to the community in a relaxed atmosphere, though they do accept donations. Donations are used to support local school district arts programs and students attending music camps, both financially and instrumentally. What a great way to support students in their development as musicians; a fantastic opportunity!
Dr. Adam Brennan, the current Wellsboro Town Band director, invites anyone entering high school and beyond with an ability to play an instrument to participate. He says, “as long as they have a pulse”, they can perform. He adds to the importance of this by saying, “we want to provide an opportunity for musicians to come together, play, and develop their skills”. He further discussed the insurmountable support the town band receives from the Wellsboro Area School District (especially the practice facilities and concert rain days’ location) and, in return, “likes to give back”. What a selfless and community enhancing act! Dr. Brennan was right on the money when he also said, “If you are looking to encapsulate the quintessential small town America, there is nothing better than a town Green, like we have behind us, and putting a band out there on the lawn. People bring their chairs out, and hear community members perform in public concerts.” Yes! What a great community event.
So, whether you play an instrument, or like listening to music, get out there and support out local musicians, both young and old, on their musical journey. Remember, you just have to “have a pulse”.
