Land of the Free, Day of the Sales

by Corrin Binford - July 4, 2014

Wellsboro Home Page would like to wish everyone a happy Independence Day! On this day, we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence and our nation’s freedom. Most importantly, we would like to thank those who have fought and served for our country.

Many people celebrate the Fourth of July by gathering together to have picnics and watch fireworks. This is a tradition that was started hundreds of years ago. The very first 4th of July celebration was one year after the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. America was fighting the Revolutionary War and the display of colorful fireworks gave us a sense of hope and patriotism for our country.

There will be fireworks displays starting at dusk over Hammond Lake at Ives Run, in Mansfield at Smythe Park, and at the Wheel Inn in Ralston, near Roaring Branch. You can also see fireworks tomorrow in downtown Galeton.

Today is also the second First Friday event on Main Street in Wellsboro. First Fridays are a way of bringing the community together through retail and entertainment. Every first Friday of each of the summer months, retailers will stay open until 8:00 pm. During that time, different types of entertainment will take place on Main Street. These events will be free of charge and may include music, face painting, caricatures and scavenger hunts. Each retailer may also have a special sale for the evening.

First Friday will take place during rain or shine.
