Lady Tigers defeat Wyalusing, 57-51

by Brady Connolly - January 16, 2017

The North-Penn Mansfield Lady Tigers came into their home match up against the Wyalusing Lady Rams carrying an 8 game losing streak. Despite the development of the young Lady Tigers, they had struggled to put one in the win column the past few games. But that would change on Friday night in the Tiger Den.

Wyalusing scored the first points of the game, but the Lady Tigers rattled off two quick three-pointers from Shaelyn Burgeson and Britany Weiskopff, to jump out to a 6-2 lead. Wyalusing answered back with a balanced scoring attack, to lead 16-14 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Tigers erased the deficit and opened up a double digit lead in the second quarter. Due in large part to freshman guard Shaelyn Burgeson’s scoring barrage of 14 points in the quarter, including 4 three point field goals, the Lady Tigers went to the halftime break with a 10 point lead, 34-24.

Wyalusing stormed out of the halftime break and got back into the game. Paced by Madelyn Edsell’s 8 points in the quarter Wyalusing trimmed the Lady Tigers lead to 2 points.
The game remained close through the fourth quarter, but North-Penn Mansfield made the plays down the stretch to take the win. First the defense frustrated Wyalusing leading scorer, Edsell, into a scoreless quarter. Then point guard Alyssa Smith made 5 of 6 free throws in the final minutes to ensure a Lady Tigers victory 57-51.

North-Penn Mansfield was led by Shaelyn Burgeson’s 25 points and 8 rebounds. Lauren Smith chipped in 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals. And Alyssa Smith finished with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.
Madelyn Edsell and Emily Champluvier led Wyalusing with 17 points and 10 points respectively.

North-Penn Mansfield play again on January 17th, when they host Cowanesque Valley.
