Lady Mounties top Canton, 6-3
The North Penn-Liberty Softball team evened up their season record at 5-5 following a 6-3 win over visiting Canton on Monday, April 29.
The Lady Mounties started things off right away as Savannah Doney hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the first to take an early 1-0 lead, then added to it later in the bottom of the second with 4 more runs. Kiersten Mitstifer drove in Mackenzie Heater, Jessica Kouba brought home Mckayla Valentine and Mitstifer, then Doney drove home Sara Swingle, making it 5-0.
Liberty scored once more in the fifth. After Doney reached base for the third time on the afternoon, Mariah Kshir drove her home to put the Lady Mounties up 6-0.
Canton made a rally in the top of the sixth adding 3 runs, but North Penn-Liberty held on to even up their record at 5-5 (4-4 NTL Large School Division).
Liberty pounded out 8 hits on the day, led by Doney who went 3-for-3, a hit shy of the cycle, with a single, double, and home run. Doney also recorded her 100th career hit on the day.
“Savannah has been playing softball since she was 8 years old and softball is a game she loves,” said head coach Lynn Grinnell. “She has put many, many hours into her pitching, batting and fielding to improve herself as a player and as an individual. It’s great to see someone with the drive and determination that she has had through the years.
“This just didn’t happen over night,” Grinnell continued. “She made the time to become better and she and her parents have worked through the rough times as well as the good times. All awards are earned and she certainly has earned all of hers with hard work, grit and determination. Coaches, community, players and especially her parents are very proud of her.”
Swingle, Kshir, Shaelyn Berguson, Kouba, and Mitstifer added the remaining 5 hits. Kouba and Doney both drove in 2 runs while Kshir and Mitstifer also added RBIs.
Doney pitched a complete game, giving up 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits with 14 strikeouts.
North Penn-Liberty is back in action later this afternoon on the road against Towanda.
