Lady Hornets top Athens, 3-1

Wellsboro Varsity volleyball team improves to 4-1

by Ed Weaver - September 16, 2016

The Wellsboro Varsity Volleyball team picked up a 3-1 NTL Large School win over Athens on Thursday, September 15.

The Lady Hornets won the first set 25-21 and the second 25-19. Athens rebounded and capitalized off numerous Wellsboro errors in the third to win 25-19 to force a fourth set. Wellsboro then regrouped in the fourth to win 25-10 to end the game.

“Tonight’s win was very important. It sets the tone for the rest of the year,” said head coach Sharon Zuchowski. “The rest of the teams are going to be looking how this match went tonight because this is the first time all the league teams have matched up.”

Senior Kirsten Florio led the team with 16 kills and 12 points (3 aces), while sister Morgan Florio had 15 kills and 13 points (2 aces). Morgan Florio also recorded 16 assists and made 11 digs on the night. Junior Jillian Graver had 7 kills, junior Sydney Tremper made 14 digs, senior Olivia Kurtz and junior Brianne Keane made 10 digs each, and Keane also added 24 assists and scored 9 points.

The Lady Hornets remained undefeated in JV play with a 2-0 (25-10, 25-17) win to improve to 5-0.

The Varsity team improves to 4-1. The team will be back in action on Saturday, September 17 on the road in Wyalusing.
