Lady Hornets edge NEB, 5-3

by Ed Weaver - October 9, 2017

The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Soccer team capped Homecoming 2017 with a 5-3 win over Northeast Bradford on Saturday, October 7.

Wellsboro scored midway through the first half as freshman Kerrah Clymer scored off an assist from sister senior Kailee Clymer to put the Lady Hornets up 1-0 in the 23rd minute, but the lead was short-lived. In the 21st minute NEB’s Karalyn Walter tied it at 1-1 on a penalty kick after being fouled in the keeper box.

Again, the lead didn’t last as the Lady Hornets’ retook control as junior Emma Poirier scored off a corner kick by junior Luna Alexander in the 18th minute.

Wellsboro held on to their lead the rest of the first half and increased it in the second as Poirier scored on her own penalty kick to make it 3-1 with 38 minutes remaining. NEB kept fighting and eventually cut the lead to 3-2 with 13 minutes remaining on a goal by Krista Hallett. The Lady Panthers tied it up four minutes later on a Karissa Cowles goal.

With time running down and overtime looming, the Clymer sisters took over on back-to-back goals to push the Lady Hornets to victory. Kerrah Clymer scored with Kailee assisting with 7 minutes remaining, then Kailee scored in the game’s final minute with Kerrah assisting to move the Lady Hornets to 5-5-1 and back to .500.

Wellsboro outshot NEB 25-16 and both teams took 2 corner kicks. Senior Sydney Tremper made 12 saves while her counterpart Kiah Russell stopped 15 shots.

Wellsboro is back in action on Monday, October 9 at Wyalusing.
