On a night meant to celebrate senior standout Harleigh Cleveland, the Wellsboro Lady Hornets came up just short as the Towanda Lady Black Knights powered their way to a 5–3 victory on Thursday, April 23rd.

Towanda wasted no time setting the tone, striking first in the top of the opening inning. Caedence Wells put the ball in play with a grounder to short, allowing Maris Cobb to cross the plate for the game’s first run.

Wellsboro answered right back in the bottom half. Delaney Morral delivered at the plate, bringing home Haylie Smith to even things at 1–1.

The Lady Black Knights regained control in the third inning. Payton Perry’s hustle on the basepaths helped push a run across, and moments later, Brynsen Vargason took advantage of a Wellsboro miscue to extend the lead to 3–1.

Both teams locked in defensively through the middle innings, but the Lady Hornets found their spark again in the fifth. Ady Frantz came through with a clutch double, driving in both Haylie Smith and Rylee Coolidge to knot the game once more.

Towanda, however, had the final say.

In the sixth inning, Molly Roberts put pressure on the defense with a tough ground ball that led to an error, allowing Leila Cobb to score and give the Black Knights the lead. Then in the seventh, Maris Cobb added an insurance run, crossing the plate again to make it a two-run cushion.

From there, Towanda’s defense shut the door, sealing the 5–3 win and silencing the Senior Night crowd.

Both teams return to action on April 28th. Wellsboro will travel to take on the Wyalusing Lady Rams, while Towanda hosts the Troy Lady Trojans.
