Join the Fight! Relay for Life!
The Annual Relay for Life will take place at the Whitneyville fair grounds this weekend.
The relay will start Friday, June 27, at 2 p.m. and continue until Saturday, June 28, at 2:00 p.m. The relay will include games, activities, prizes, fundraisers, food, raffles and ceremonies. These ceremonies are to honor those who have lost their battle, those who are currently in the fight and those who have overcome cancer through a candle lighting ceremony.
People often wonder where their money is going when they donate to the Cancer Society. 72% of their dollar goes to the services and programs the American Cancer Society offers while 28% goes to activities like Relay for Life and the staff. An example of one of the programs that is available in Tioga County is the Road to Recovery Project.
Road to recovery takes patients to and from their treatments. There will be a new Cancer Center in Tioga County at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital for cancer patients to get the care they need close to home.
Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner, Laura Balmer, gives us a tour of the new Cancer Center at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. Cancer patients have also given their input for the design of the center. Some of its features include patient chairs that have massages, personalized temperature settings, reclining options, televisions and Sirius Radio.
