It’s Teacher Appreciation Week!

by John Vogt - May 8, 2014

I can still remember to this day where I was when Sister Olivia changed my life forever. I was standing next to my desk in the back of our 7th grade class room with by best friend, Mark. I was telling Mark about something that I was going to do when I grew up. I wasn’t the best student and definitely not one of the brightest bulbs in our class. Mark, who would never mean to hurt me, said, “Vogt, you’ll never be a able to do that.” Sister Olivia was sitting at her desk in the front of the room and overheard the entire conversation. She got up and walked briskly into our conversation. First, she looked at Mark and said, “John Vogt can do anything he puts his mind to do.” Then she looked right through my eyes and into my soul, and said with incredible persuasion and conviction, “you can do anything you put your mind to do by God’s grace.” Something amazing happened inside me at that moment. I believed her. She somehow convinced me that I could see my dreams come true.

Sister Olivia was also a great teacher. But what I remember the most, and am forever grateful for, was that life-changing moment in 7th grade. Her proclamation helped to carry me through many challenges over these past 50 years.

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. We encourage our Home Page viewers to take a moment to thank the teachers who have influenced and impacted your lives. Using today’s technology and social media, we have the opportunity to thank more teachers than ever before. By including the hashtag phrase – #ThankATeacher – on social media websites – helps share this message globally. Handwritten personal notes can be the most treasured of all! Take a few moments to reflect on those special teachers in your life and then find a way to make it happen. Don’t put it off another year – just do it! Say, THANK YOU!

In closing, a special thanks to TIMELESS DESTINATION here in Wellsboro – for not only sponsoring today’s feature story, but also providing $50.00 gift certificates to our selected teachers. To Jay Hixon and all the TIMELESS DESTINATION staff, thank you for encouraging the teachers in our community.
