How It’s Made – Career Day

by Home Page Staff - October 16, 2019

On Tuesday, October 8th, Blossburg Elementary School hosted “How It’s Made – Career Day.”

In a partnership with Northern Tier Regional Planning & Development Commission, the school districted held this educational event. Numerous presenters from a myriad of trades attended to talk to the students about what they do, answer questions, and show the kids “how it’s made.”

From bee-keeping, to fashioning deer calls, to fly-tying and more – students observed and learned the origins and processes that take place behind the scenes of many jobs.

“Just to help the students become aware of how they’re made,” said career coach, Pat Chappell. “Learn more vocabulary, maybe learn a hobby, maybe learn a career. I think we have about 16 [presenters] here today.”

Some of the older students were assigned questionnaires to fill out about the presenters. Sixth-grade students were given the responsibility of being helpers to the presenters, including participating in some hands-on training.

“I think the best part of ‘How It’s Made – Career Day’ is that all of our students get to see the great manufactures in Tioga County,” said Blossburg Elementary School Principal William Swingle. “We have small entrepreneurs that it’s a side-business for them, to major manufacturers like Ward Manufacturing. The great jobs that are right here. The future of our workforce is here and they’re creative, they’re innovative. A great future for these students so they get a chance to see what they can look forward to.”

Special thanks to Principle Swingle, Career Coach Pat Chappell, Head Teacher Tom Dickinson, School Counselor Noreen Wheeler, Super Intendant Sam Rotella, and the Southern Tioga School District for making “How It’s Made – Career Day” such a success.
