Hornets Win with Grand Slam!

by Ed Weaver - May 4, 2015

A grand slam by Junior Dawson Prough gave the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team an 11-5 win over Wyalusing on Friday, May 1.

Wyalusing struck first with one run in the top of the first inning, but that’s the only lead they would have as they Hornets scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior Nick Tremper scored on an RBI single by Brett Kendrick and Junior Joe Allen hit a two-run single that brought Kendrick and Senior Nick Levindoski home.

The Hornets would add another run in the second inning as Tremper hit an RBI single to bring Freshman Caleb Tennis home to go up 4-1. After a scoreless third inning by both teams, Wellsboro added three more in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. Freshman Dalton Prough scored on his brother’s RBI single and Levindoski drove home Tremper and Dawson Prough on a single of his own.

Wyalusing scored one run in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-2, and scored three in the sixth to bring it to 7-5, but that’s when Dawson Prough broke the game wide-open. Freshman Johnathan Rowland, Dalton Prough, and Tremper all reached base with Dawson coming to the plate. Prough got his pitch and drove a deep fly ball to left field that cleared the bases and gave the Hornets the 11-5 victory.

Junior James Mundy started on the mound and pitched five innings. Mundy walked one batter, struck out four, and surrendered six hits on the night for the win. Junior Sam Moss came on in relief for the final two innings.

At the plate, Dawson Prough was 2-for-4 with the grand slam, Tremper was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and Kendrick was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

The win increases the Hornets’ win streak to seven games and brings their record to 10-4 (5-2 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Monday, May 4 as they travel to Towanda.
