Hornets Top Rams In Defensive Battle, 24-6

by Joe Carreon - October 18, 2021

Wellsboro turned five turnovers, including two interceptions grabbed by Hornet QB Isaac Keane to help his own cause into a 24-6 win over the host Rams Friday night in NTL Large School action, despite missing several key starters for the game.

Wyalusing opened the scoring with a 49-yard pass from Blake Morningstar to Jacob Bruyn with 6:37 left in the opening quarter. The kick failed, but the Rams led 6-0.

Wellsboro would answer on a Kenan Keck 19-yard run. Jack Poirier added the point after to give the Hornets a 7-6 lead.

Poirier hit a 25-yard field goal with 5:43 left in the second quarter to make it 10-6 Hornets at the half.

Neither team could muster a score until the fourth quarter when Keane punched one in from a yard out. Poirier’s kick was good, and Wellsboro pushed their lead to 17-6 with 6:50 left in the game.

With under four minutes left in the game, Keane found Ryan Sweet for a 30-yard TD pass to push the Hornet lead to 24-6 after Poirier’s PAT.

Keane, who was missing a couple of his usual targets in the game, finished 5-for-21 for 160-yards with a score.

Dallas Schutz led Wellsboro in rushing with 33-yards on seven carries, while Sweet had 81-yards on three receptions..

Wellsboro has won their last two games, evening their record at 3-3 overall. They will host 5-3 Athens Friday.
