Hornets top NP-Liberty & NP-Mansfield

by Ed Weaver - May 9, 2017

Clymer homer pushes Lady Hornets past North Penn-Liberty

A solo home run by junior Kailee Clymer in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Wellsboro Varsity Softball team a 5-3 win over rival North Penn-Liberty on Monday, May 8.

The Lady Hornets trailed after the top of the third as the Lady Mounties poured on the offense with three runs. Carmen Bates led off the inning with a shallow pop fly to short to reach base followed by a base hit to right field by Brooke Harvey. A hit back to the pitcher by Savanah Doney loaded the bases for Mackenzie Heater, who reached on an error by freshman Ryann Adams to score Bates. A base hit to right field by Abby Heatley scored Harvey and an infield hit by Emily Strange scored Doney to put North Penn-Liberty up 3-0.

“The third inning we struggled some, gave up a few hits, Alyssa got hit with a hard line-drive right back at her that kind of rattled them a little bit but it happens,” said Wellsboro head coach Ron Brought. “Every team at this age every now and then you’re going to have a bad inning but they responded very well. We kept getting runners on every inning and out-hit them 10-6 and if it wasn’t for that inning the score would’ve been much more in our favor.”

From that point on it was all Wellsboro. Junior Alyssa Yungwirth started the bottom of the third with a base hit followed by a double by junior Sydney Tremper. A single by freshman Cathryn Brought scored Yungwirth and a single by junior Brianne Keane scored Tremper from second to cut the score to 3-2 entering the fourth.

Wellsboro capitalized on two Liberty errors to take their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the fourth after Clymer recorded all three outs in the top half of the inning. Sophomore Tiana Lecker reached on an error to start and an Adams base hit put two on board. After back-to-back outs Brought reached on a throwing error from third base to score both Lecker and Adams, putting Wellsboro on top 4-3.

Yungwirth retired the next nine Liberty batters in order, with Clymer’s home run in the bottom of the fifth, to win their 12th straight game. The junior finished the complete game on the mound allowing six hits and striking out 11 for her 11th win of the season and went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Clymer was 2-for-3 with her first career home run and 2 RBI’s, Adams was 2-for-4, and Tremper, Brought, and Keane rounded out the Lady Hornets’ 10 hits.

“Defense was outstanding again tonight,” concluded Brought. “Strong plays by Kailee at short, Heidi Zuchowski did a fantastic job at first base, outfielders made the plays when they had to, and Alyssa on the mound with 11 strikeouts, that’s a great combination.”

Harvey was 2-for-4 for Liberty, Bates was 1-for-4, Heatley was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Strange was 1-for-3. Doney pitched a complete game with 5 strikeouts.

The win improves Wellsboro to 13-1 (12-1 NTL Large School Division) and clinch the NTL Large School Division championship for the third straight year. Liberty falls to 11-4 (8-4 NTL Large School Division).

Hornets top rival North Penn-Mansfield to split season series

The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team avenged a 13-2 earlier season loss to rival North Penn-Mansfield with a 4-2 win on Monday, May 8 to split the season series.

“It was a good baseball game,” said head coach Philip Prough. “Both teams did the little things to give themself a chance to win. We had the timely hit and came out with the victory.”

The rubber match of the Wellsboro-Mansfield rivalry was a pitchers duel between the Tigers’ Logan Adams and Wellsboro freshman Billy Lechler. Both teams struggled at the plate as Wellsboro junior Dalton Prough had the only hit until the top of the third inning. In that inning, the Tigers found the scoreboard when Dewey Wise led off with a base hit then scored as Kipp Hillson grounded out to short.

Wellsboro finally found the scoreboard in the top of the fourth to tie the game. Prough drew a walk to lead off the inning and scored on a Lechler ground out to second.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when the Hornets took the lead. Prough and sophomore Cam Tennis led off the inning with back-to-back base hits and were brought home on a double by junior Caleb Tennis to put Wellsboro up 3-1. Junior Brent English then drove Caleb Tennis home with a double in the next at bat to make the score 4-1.

North Penn-Mansfield had life in the top of the seventh as Joel Whitteker was hit to lead off the inning, but a 6-4-3 double play quickly put the Tigers with two outs. Wise singled for the second time of the afternoon to reach base, then Dylan Wesneski doubled to score Wise to make the score 4-2. Wellsboro hung on for the win as junior Johnny Rowland got Kipp Hillson to ground out to end the game.

Rowland improved his record to 6-2 on the year with three innings of relief for Lechler, allowing only two hits. Lechler pitched the game’s first four innings with two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.

“Billy and Johnny pitched well,” Prough said of his pitchers. “Both were around the plate. Our goal is four or fewer walks per game. If we do that, we’ll be in every game. Tonight, we had four walks. It gave us a chance and Caleb came up big.”

Prough was 2-for-2 with a walk, Cam Tennis and Lechler were 1-for-2, and Caleb Tennis, English, and Rowland were all 1-for-3.

“Both Tennis boys have been seeing the ball well lately,” Prough concluded. “It’s good to see them doing well. They’re both too good of hitters to go all season in a funk. They play a big part for our team. They may not have the dazzling stats, but without them, we wouldn’t succeed. So I’m happy Caleb delivered. Now, we just move on to the next game and take them one at a time.”

Wise was 2-for-3 and Whitteker and Wesneski were both 1-for-3, Hillson and Wesneski had RBI’s, and Adams pitched a complete game with six hits, 2 walks, and a strikeout.

The win improvs the Hornets to 8-7 (8-5 NTL Large School Division), while the Tigers drop to 12-4 (10-3 NTL Large School Division).

Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday, May 10. Wellsboro hosts Wyalusing and North Penn-Mansfield and North Penn-Liberty travels to Athens.
