Hornets take tough win over Troy

The Wellsboro Boys Basketball team struggled offensively but beat Troy 33-26 on Thursday, January 21.

The Hornets quikly scored the game’s first points on a three from junior Brandon Lamphier. Troy made a quick bucket to make the score 3-2, but that was as close as they would get from that point on. Sophomore Quinn Henry hit a three to push Wellsboro’ lead to 6-2 and Wellsboro took a 10-7 lead after the first quarter.

Both teams struggled in both the second and third quarters. Wellsboro outscored Troy 8-3 in the second to take a 18-10 lead at halftime after junior Jacob Singer hit a three before time expired. In the third, both teams only managed to score two points each, with Wellsboro keeping their eight-point lead at 20-12 as the fourth quarter started.

Troy closed the gap in the fourth as the Hornets got into foul trouble. Troy shot 6-of-7 from the foul line in the quarter, but eventually they to got in foul trouble and the Hornets went 6-of-8 from the line to come away with the win.

Henry scored a game-high 10 points and had seven rebounds, sophomore Nic Ingerick finished with seven points, Lamphier and Singer each scored five points, junior Alden Weiner had four, and sophomore Collin Pietropola rounded out the night with two points. Lamphier grabbed six rebounds, senior Dawson Prough had three assists giving him 105 for his career, and Singer and Weiner each blocked a shot.

The JV team kept their undefeated season going at 16-0 with a 49-12 win. Freshman Andrew Brelo led the team with 14 points, Brandyn Tuttle scored 13, and Ingerick had 11.

The win improves the Varsity team’s record to 10-6. The team will be back in action on Saturday, January 23 in Liberty with a 3:00 p.m. start time.
