Hornets sweep Canton & Towanda

by Ed Weaver - October 5, 2016

The Wellsboro Cross Country teams both picked up wins over Canton and Towanda on Tuesday, October 4 at Nessmuk Lake. The Lady Hornets beat Canton 22-33 and beat Towanda 21-34 to improve to 6-2 overall, while the boys topped Canton 20-35 and Towanda 19-36 to improve to 7-1. Canton also picked up wins over Towanda as the girls won 27-28 and the boys won 24-31.

Wellsboro’s Anna Bleggi won the girls race in 22:59, followed by Canton’s Tamara Hess in 23:16, Wellsboro’s Kayla Mengee in 23:53, Canton’s Rachel Sparling in 23:57, and Wellsboro’s Jaime Palmer rounded out the top 5 in 24:24.

Also for the Wellsboro girls, Rachel Chamberlain (25:39) finished 9th, Kylie Butler (25:58) was 10th, and Emma Palmer (30:13) was 15th.

Aidan Perry won the boys race for the Hornets in 18:40, followed by Connor Brought in 19:10. Canton’s Mak Gleckner finished in third in 19:31, Towanda’s Eric Lauber was 4th in 19:39, and Wellsboro’s Austin Richards finished 5th in 19:40.

Alden Weiner (20:06) was 7th for Wellsboro, Bergen Weiner (20:32) was 9th, Zack Busch (20:50) was 10th, Michael Stefanowicz (21:02) finished 13th, Bryon Callahan (21:47) was 15th, Lucas Citrino (23:22) came home 19th, Logan Morral (23:35) was 20th, Taylor Wheeler (24:25) was 22nd, Tyren Wetzel (31:41) was 25th, and Noah Smith (36:40) finished 26th.

“It was a tremendous day,” Wellsboro head coach Ron Brought said. “Every runner on the team improved their time from the last time we were on the course here, which was two weeks ago. Conditions were more favorable today and I think that they were more comfortable in general running. They’re peaking at the right time, we’re going into the later part of the season here when we want to be preparing for the District meet and they’re doing the work and it’s paying off.”

The Hornets will be back in action next Tuesday, October 11 for their final NTL dual meet with North Penn-Mansfield before gearing up for the NTL Coaches Invite and Districts later in the month.
