Hornets Sting Towanda, Roll to 33–12 Victory

by Wyatt Wood, Andrew Moore - September 15, 2025

The Wellsboro Hornets controlled the pace from start to finish on Friday, September 12, powering past the Towanda Black Knights for a decisive 33–12 win on their home turf.

The Hornets struck early in the first quarter when Reed Richardson muscled through defenders for the opening touchdown. Wellsboro’s offense quickly found its rhythm, as quarterback Griffin Morral connected with Max Mascho on a 50-yard strike. With Finn Matthews’ extra point, the Hornets surged ahead 13–0.

Towanda answered in the second quarter with Curtis Maynard capping off a determined drive to close the gap, 13–6. The Black Knights capitalized on a Wellsboro fumble moments later, but the Hornet defense stiffened, forcing Brayden Spencer to settle for a 27-yard field goal. That trimmed the lead to 13–9.

Wellsboro responded before halftime with a statement drive. Morral found Kody Enck for a big gain, setting up Mascho’s second touchdown of the night. The Hornets carried a 19–9 advantage into the break.

Halftime also celebrated Wellsboro’s Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2025. This year’s inductees were Deb Bilder, Dailyn Cooney, Carrie Gorda, Chris Morral, and Todd Crumb.

The second half saw more of Wellsboro’s defensive grit. Spencer tacked on another field goal for Towanda in the third quarter, but the Hornets never let their lead slip.

In the fourth, Wellsboro’s offense put the game away. On fourth-and-long, Morral rolled out and dropped a perfect pass to Enck for a 29-yard score. Moments later, the Hornets faked a field goal, with Max Mascho tossing a touchdown to his brother Marek. Morral then added a rushing touchdown of his own, crossing the pylon to seal the 33–12 victory.

The Hornets now look to keep their momentum rolling as they travel to face Cowanesque Valley on Friday night.
