The Troy Trojans and Wellsboro Hornets delivered everything fans could ask for Tuesday night, trading momentum, big shots and defensive stops in a tightly contested varsity basketball matchup that stayed undecided until the final seconds. When the dust settled, it was Wellsboro escaping with a hard-fought 68–63 road victory over Troy.

Wellsboro set the tone early. Griffin Morral found Colin Fletcher for a wide-open three to open the scoring, and Fletcher stayed hot throughout the first quarter. Johnathan Carl fueled the Hornets on both ends, playing smothering defense before jumping a passing lane for a breakaway layup. Behind Fletcher’s shooting and Carl’s energy, Wellsboro surged ahead 21–10 by the end of the opening frame.

Troy answered in the second quarter, with Cameron Morey knocking down a bucket to spark the Trojans. But each Troy push was met with a Wellsboro response, and Fletcher struck again from beyond the arc to maintain the Hornets’ edge. At halftime, Wellsboro clung to a 39–34 lead.

The Trojans roared back after the break. Trey Teribury buried a deep three to ignite the home crowd, and Evan Allen followed with another long-range shot to give Troy its first lead of the night. Troy carried the momentum into the fourth, holding a 54–50 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Wellsboro refused to fade. Luke Rothermel drove the lane and kicked it out to Marek Mascho to knot the game early in the final period. Teribury answered with a highlight-reel steal and slam to keep Troy alive, but the Hornets stayed composed down the stretch, converting key free throws to seal the win.

Wellsboro’s late-game execution proved decisive as the Hornets closed out the 68–63 victory in a true nail-biter.

Both teams return to action Thursday night, with Troy set to host North Penn-Mansfield and Wellsboro welcoming Athens.
