Hornets Sting Cowanesque Valley, Soar to 37-15 Victory
The Wellsboro Hornets stormed past the Cowanesque Valley Indians on Friday night, September 19, putting together a dominant performance on both sides of the ball to secure a 37-15 road win.
After a scoreless first quarter, Wellsboro struck in the second when Reed Richardson powered in from seven yards out to give the Hornets a 6-0 lead. Just before halftime, quarterback Griffin Morral pitched the ball to Marek Mascho, who launched a pass to the back of the end zone. Kody Enck made the grab, stretching the advantage to 12-0.
The Hornets kept the pressure on in the third quarter. Following a successful onside kick after a double penalty, Mascho recovered the ball deep in CV territory. Wellsboro capitalized on the opportunity, extending the lead to 18-0. Moments later, Morral connected on a deep strike to Ethan Keane for another touchdown, pushing the score to 24-0.
With less than a minute left in the quarter, Morral read the Indians’ offense perfectly, picking off a pass and racing it back for a pick-six. The extra point was good, and Wellsboro entered the final frame ahead, 31-0.
The Hornets weren’t done. Early in the fourth, a blocked punt gave Wellsboro prime field position. Morral kept it himself and powered into the end zone to put Wellsboro up 37-0.
Cowanesque Valley avoided the shutout with two late scores, but the outcome had long been decided. The Hornets walked away with a commanding 37-15 victory.
Wellsboro will look to keep the momentum rolling when they return home Friday, September 26, to host the Athens Wildcats.
