Hornets shutout Galeton 2-0 in Districts

Hornets shutout Galeton 2-0 in Districts

by Ed Weaver - October 31, 2016

The Wellsboro Boys Soccer team advanced to the next round of District IV Class A playoffs with a 2-0 win over Galeton on Saturday, October 29.

“I’m very proud of the boys tonight. They really implemented our game plan,” said head coach John Shaffer after picking up his 90th career win. “We limited Galeton of clear chances and we created a lot of quality chances. Our attackers movement is a handful to deal with and in the back the defense is really coming together. Cameron Tennis had an amazing goal line clearance tonight in the 2nd half to keep the shutout going.”

The Hornets went up midway through the first half on a goal by junior Tanner Runyan. Later in the second half sophomore Brett Rudy found senior Josiah Hill, who converted a header, to make the score 2-0 with 30:24 remaining.

Wellsboro edged Galeton 12-10 in shot attempts, but Galeton won the corner kicks 7-1. Senior Casey Hoover made 9 saves in goal for his 16th career shutout.

Next up for the Hornets (15-4) is a rematch with East Juniata, who knocked Wellsboro out of the playoffs last year, on Tuesday, November 1 at a date and time to be determined.

“We are going to face a really good East Juniata squad Tuesday night,” Shaffer continued. “I hope that we can really give them a game and improve on how we did against them last year.”
