The Hornets Sharpen Their Stingers
After an undefeated 2013 season and bringing home the Morton F. Jones Trophy two years in a row, the Hornets are home and back on the practice field getting ready for the 2014 season.
Head Coach Matt Hildebrand told Home Page, “We have a great freshman class to go with our stout senior class. We have 16 seniors coming back to help with our new group.” Assistant Coach Mike Pietropolia Sr. also stated, “They are working hard and trying to stay healthy.”
This summer, the Hornets won the opportunity to represent the Buffalo Bills after winning both the district and regional tournaments in the NFL’s National High School Player Development competition. The NFL flew the Hornets to Indianapolis on July 13th where they competed against top teams from around the country. “The (7-on-7) Tournament was a great experience for us. Facing top notch competition, ups the competition,” said quarterback Mike Pietroplia. Wide Recever Kieron Smethers echoed, “I took away how to really play the game, and where to be at the right time.”
Home Page had the opportunity to speak with Head Coach Hildebrand during their practice. He noted his “biggest concern is complacency, coming off a season like we had last year, it’s easy to take for granted the things that happened last year and think it’s just gonna happen without the work…we preach you need to continue to work everyday.”
Home Page wishes the Hornets the very best as they start their season, August 29th at Cowanesque Vally.
