Hornets improve to 17-1 with win over Troy

by Ed Weaver - January 29, 2017

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team overcame a slow start to beat Troy 61-34 on Friday, January 26.

After a 12-7 first quarter the Hornets started to put some distance on Troy in the second quarter by outscoring them 16-8 to lead 28-13 at the half. The Hornets really came alive to start the second half as junior Brandyn Tuttle sparked a 17-point quarter with 8 points.

Wellsboro built a 20-point lead after the third quarter then outscored Troy 16-9 over the final 8 minutes, to win their 15th straight game.

Tuttle led all scorers with a game-high 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season. Senior Dalton Prough also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. He also added 3 steals and blocked 4 shots. Senior Nic Ingerick dropped 8 points, senior Quinn Henry added 7, juniors Andrew Brelo and Holden Kennedy scored 4 points each, freshman Joseph Grab added 3 points late in the game, and juniors Tanner Button and Hunter Brown both chipped in with 2 points each.

Henry added 5 assists to his point total and Brelo blocked 3 shots.

The Hornets started the night with a 49-29 win in the JV game to improve to 10-6. Grab led Wellsboro with 15 and sophomore Daniel Mitchell scored 10.

The win improves the Varsity team’s record to 17-1 (13-0 NTL Large School Division). The Hornets will be back in action on Monday, January 29 at Montoursville.
