Hornets Explode After Rain Delay to Rout Canton, 15-5

by Andrew Moore, Wyatt Wood - May 1, 2026

What started as a tight early contest turned into a statement win Thursday afternoon, as the Wellsboro Hornets erupted for a dominant 15-5 victory over the Canton Warriors in a game that took a dramatic turn after a rain-soaked delay.

Canton struck first in the top of the opening inning, when Daniel Inman laced a line drive to center field to bring home Bailey Gardner for a quick 1-0 lead. Wellsboro’s defense limited the damage, keeping the Warriors to just the lone run.

The Hornets wasted no time responding. In the bottom half of the first, Cameron Owlett delivered a deep pop fly into short center field, allowing Griffin Morrel and Gabe Cuneo to tag up and score. Moments later, Gage Baltzley sent a grounder down the third-base line, driving in Max Masco and Owlett to cap a four-run inning and give Wellsboro a 4-1 advantage.

Canton battled back in the second. Gardner ripped a double to score Trapper Burr, and Reed Taylor followed with a sharp hit down the first-base line to plate Carson Castle. The Warriors added another run to pull within one.

But once again, Wellsboro answered. Cohen Tennis put the ball in play to shortstop, bringing home Morrel to edge the Hornets back in front, 5-4, by the end of the second inning.

After a scoreless third, heavy rains moved in during the fourth inning, cutting short on-site video coverage. But the Hornets were just getting started.

When play continued, Wellsboro unleashed an offensive surge, piling on runs to break the game wide open and eventually secure a 15-5 mercy-rule victory over Canton.

Canton hits the road again Friday at Muncy, while Wellsboro returns home Saturday to host South Williamsport.
