Hornets Double-Header Basketball!

by Ed Weaver - January 28, 2015

The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 46-35 victory over Troy on Tuesday, January 27.

The Lady Hornets struggled early as they missed a lot of wide-open shots near the basket, but they would eventually settle down and would hold a narrow 9-8 lead after the first quarter. Junior Sarah Ingerick came alive in the second quarter as she scored 12 of her team-high 24 points to put Wellsboro up 27-27 at the half.

The second half was all Wellsboro as the Lady Hornets outscored Troy 19-15 down the stretch for the victory.

Junior Jada Jackson was second on the team with eight points and 11 rebounds, and Senior Jordan Butters finished with seven. Freshman Rachael Tuttle scored four points and grabbed eight rebounds, Freshman Lizzie Poirier ended with two, and Junior Alexa Singer rounded out the scoring with one point.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 9-9 (3-4 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Thursday, January 29 as they host Wyalusing.

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team suffered a 79-53 loss at the hands of undefeated St. John Neumann on Tuesday, January 27.

Wellsboro was outmatched from the opening tip as Neumann’s pesky defense caused turnover after turnover in the game’s opening minutes. Neumann jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before Wellsboro head coach Todd Outman called a timeout to regroup. Sophomore Brandon Lamphier got the Hornets on the scoreboard with a jumper after grabbing an offensive rebound.

Neumann would keep the pressure on, however as they held the Hornets to only six first quarter points, their lowest of the season. The Golden Knights maintained a 21-6 advantage as the second quarter started. Wellsboro would cut into the lead slightly, but Neumann kept forcing Hornet turnovers and led 47-21 at the half.

Wellsboro outscored Neumann 17-16 in the third quarter as the Hornets outside shots finally dropped, but Neumann was just too much and would end up with the 79-53 victory.

Senior Michael Pietropola led the Hornets with 13 points and Junior Dawson Prough finished with 10. Lamphier would add seven points, Freshman Quinn Henry pitched in five, Sophomore Alden Weiner had four, Freshman Nic Ingerick and Senior Brieux Thibaut each scored three, and Senior Kieron Smethers, Sophomore Jacob Singer, Sophomore Bryon Callahan, and Freshman Collin Pietropola all finished with two points.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 12-4 (4-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Wednesday, January 28 as they host Troy.
