Hornets defeat Liberty, 5-2

by Ed Weaver - September 11, 2015

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team remained undefeated on the 2015 season with a 5-2 defeat of Liberty on Thursday, September 10.

The Hornets wasted little time as senior Tucker Worthington scored with 37:33 left in the first half off an assist from senior Dawson Prough. Sophomore Tanner Runyan scored 10 minutes later as he took a pass from junior Josiah Hill to put the Hornets up 2-0. Liberty brought the score to 2-1 with 16:34 remaining in the opening half on a goal by Sean Upham, but the Hornets answered back with just over five minutes left as Hill scored to put the Hornets up 3-1.

Liberty struck with 34:47 left in the second half as Upham scored his second goal of the night. From that point on, however, it was all Wellsboro. Worthington increased the Hornets’ lead to 4-2 on a penalty kick after sophomore Nic Ingerick was fouled in the keeper box. Wellsboro’s final goal came with 4:04 left as Prough found the back of the net.

Junior Casey Hoover recorded three saves in net for Wellsboro.

“Tonight was the best passing I’ve seen from the boys in six years,” said head coach John Shaffer. “The ball movement was great. Sean Dooley, Gabe Leach and Tucker were great in the middle.

“We gave up some fluke goals tonight but those will happen in games and the bits responded well to that. It was good prep for a tough game against South Williamsport.”

With the win the Hornets improve to 2-0 (2-0 NTL). The team will be back in action this Saturday, September 12 as they travel to South Williamsport.
