Hornets Claim Homecoming Win Over CV, 40-8
On Friday, September 20th, the Wellsboro Hornets football team hosted the Cowanesque Valley Indians on Homecoming Night. Before the game, the homecoming parade proceeded down Main Street in Wellsboro. Once the parade concluded, the crowd made their way up to the high school.
Three plays into the opening drive, Indians on their own 40, Hornet Cole Knapp reads the short pass for a pick-six! After Johnathan Carl’s extra point, Wellsboro led 7-0 right out the gate.
After a hard fought drive down the field, the Hornets got their second score on the night as Ryder Bowen punches it up the middle. The extra point was good, Wellsboro up 14.
Second quarter – the Indians deep in Wellsboro territory, CV’s Graham Hess calls his own number and follows his blocker into the end zone. The Indians followed up with a two point conversion, making it 14-8 Wellsboro.
Later in the quarter, Bowen again punches it through the defensive line to increase the Hornets’ lead 20-8.
With 4 minutes and 40 seconds left in the half, Hornets on the Indian 37 yard line – Griffin Morral steps back in the pocket, launches it to the flat, and a wide open Kody Enck. The kick was good, Wellsboro ahead 27-8.
During halftime – Wellsboro’s homecoming court was introduced. This year’s Duke was Lucas Cuneo. And this year’s Duchess was Anna Morgan. Emmanuel Posada was crowned as this year’s Homecoming King. And Paige Logsdon was crowned Homecoming Queen.
Late in the third quarter, Wellsboro works their way into the red zone – Bowen receives the handoff, hits the outside and powers through the secondary. After the extra point, it was 34-8, Wellsboro.
And finally, in the fourth quarter – our Wilkinson-Dunn Play of the Game. Wellsboro lined up on their own 16 yard line, Bowen takes the ball and rumbles 84 yards to the house, putting the final nail in the coffin – 40-8, Wellsboro.
The Hornets will be on the road next week as they face off agains the Athens Wildcats.
