Hornets Claim Comeback Victory!
The Wellsboro Hornets defeated the Bloomsburg Panthers this past Friday evening in the last minute of play!
Both teams played well throughout the game. It was back and forth during the first quarter until Levi Mack found his way around the left side and took it all the way to the end zone. The extra point by Jack Chambers was good and the Hornets were up, 7 to nothing.
Then late in the first quarter Levi Mack lost the ball on the Panthers’ thirty six yard line. Sam Miller recovered the fumble for the Panthers and made a beeline for the end zone for the Panthers’ first score of the evening. But the extra point was blocked by Kieron Smethers and the Hornets led by one point with 12 seconds left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Hornets had the ball on their own 36 when Levi Mack picked up a couple of great blocks, found his way through the Panthers’ defense, and took it all the way down to the Panthers’ 20. Then Brandon Lamphier threw a perfect pass to Kieron Smethers for the touchdown. The extra point by Chambers was good and the Hornets were up, 14 to 6.
The second half began with a fired-up Panthers team. At that point in the game Bloomdburg seemed very determined. We have no idea what was said in the locker room, but the Panthers had a sense of urgency in their play. They wasted no time moving the ball as Kashner found Brandon Breisch on a thirty-seven yard bomb. Krashner then scored a touchdown from the one yard line. The Panthers made a two-point conversion by Jahvell Hemphill, tying it up in the third 14 / 14.
Then Brandon Lamphier found Nick Marple and Wellsboro took the ball down to the Panthers’ forty-two. Levi Mack scored on a great run over the left side, but the Hornets were flagged for holding. The flag nullified the touchdown and brought the ball back out to the Panthers’ forty-three. A great defensive effort by the Panthers and stops Wellsboro’s drive.
In the fourth quarter the Panthers caught the Hornets’ defense by surprise with a swing pass to the right. Brandon Breisch made some great moves and scored. The extra point was good and the Panthers took the lead, 21 / 14.
Later in the fourth, the Panthers scored again with what looked like a partially blocked field goal, but it was good and with only 4 minutes left to play – Bloombsburg was up by two scores, 24 / 14.
Then – one of the biggest plays of the game took place when Nick Marple received the Panthers kick-off on the Hornets’ 13-yard-line, running all the way down to the Panthers’ 35. Then Brandon Lamphier connected with a wide-open Marple on a 35-yard pass, and the Hornets score. The critical extra point by Chambers was good and the Hornets pulled within 3 points of the Panthers.
The Panthers tried to get something going, but the Hornets’ defense held firm and Wellsboro got the ball back with just over 2 minutes to play. Brandon Lamphier was then thrown down hard in the back field, hitting his head on the ground and was knocked out of the game. (Lamphier ended his amazing day with 110 yards and 2 touch downs.) With one minute, twenty seconds on the clock – Michael Pietropola (who was injured last week) took over as quarterback, wearing number 7. Pietropola fired a pass right before being tackled to Smethers at the Panther’s 15. Then, with just under a minute left, Pietropola connected with Smithers again – this time in the right corner of the end zone. The extra point by Mr. Chambers was good and the Hornets were back on top 28 / 24.
With time running out, the Panthers attempt a Hail Mary, but it’s knocked away and the Hornets win a nail biter, 28 / 24.
