Hornets Blank Mounties, Fitch Celebrated for 100th Career Win
A steady drizzle couldn’t dampen the energy Wednesday night as the Wellsboro Hornets soccer team shut out the North Penn-Liberty Mounties, 2-0, on their home field.
Before kickoff, Hornets coach Todd Fitch was honored for reaching a career milestone — his 100th win, achieved earlier this season with a 5-0 victory over Towanda.
Wellsboro struck first about 30 minutes into play when Zander Rachiele lofted a long ball past midfield to Jacob Smith, who slipped into the box and beat the keeper for a 1-0 lead.
The Hornets extended their advantage minutes later when Brayden Benjamin delivered a corner kick into the box, connecting with Smith and then Colin Fletcher, who powered the ball into the net for the night’s final goal.
Both defenses tightened up for the remainder of the match, securing the Hornets’ shutout.
Wellsboro will travel to Athens on Saturday, while the Mounties look to bounce back at home against Williamson.
