Hornet baseball falls to Athens, 6-3

3 Athens runs in seventh inning breaks 3-3 tie

by Ed Weaver - May 4, 2016

The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team suffered a 6-3 loss to Athens on Tuesday, May 3.

The Hornets jumped out to an early lead as sophomore Dalton Prough reached base then scored on a triple from senior Dawson Prough to make it 1-0. Two batters later, senior Joe Allen singled to bring Dawson Prough home to make it 2-0.

The visiting Wildcats got a run back in the top of the second to make it 2-1, but Wellsboro increased their lead in the bottom of the 3rd as Dawson Prough got on base, then senior James Mundy drove him home to make it 3-1 after senior Nick Tremper moved him to third in the previous at-bat.

Athens rallied in the top of the fourth as they scored 2 runs to tie it at 3-3, and the game remained tied as the Hornets took the field in the top of the seventh. With runners in scoring position Horn singled to score Felt to give the Wildcats their first lead of the game. Then one batter latter, Joyce bunted to move the runner over, but an errant throw to third brought home another run to make it 5-3. One batter later, Stivason brought Joyce home to make it 6-3 Athens.

Wellsboro was unable to do anything at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, giving Athens the NTL Division 1 win.

Allen and Dawson Prough each went 2-for-3 with RBI’s at the plate for the Hornets, with Dawson Prough hitting a triple. Dalton Prough was 2-for-4, and Tremper and Mundy each finished 1-for-3. Allen pitched the 6 innings, striking out one, walking 3, and allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 11 hits. Sophomore Johnny Rowland pitched the final inning, allowing 2 hits, a walk, and an earned run.

Stein led Athens with 3 hits, Kennedy, Newman, and Stivason had 2 hits, and Felt, Jennings, Joyce, and Reagan also added hits. Jennings pitched a complete game, allowing 7 hits, 3 runs (3 earned), and a walk while striking out 8 for the win.

The loss drops the Hornets to 6-5 on the year. The team turns around for a game with Troy later today.
