Hilson’s three sinks Lady Hornets

by Ed Weaver - February 7, 2016

A three-pointer by North Penn-Mansfield’s Ali Hillson sent the Wellsboro Lady Hornets home with their second straight loss as they fell 38-32 to the Lady Tigers on Friday, February 5.

The teams were tied at 30-30 after sophomore Lizzie Poirier hit a three with 3:05 left to play, and the score remained that way until the Lady Tigers’ Alysa Davey-Bostic was fouled and sent to the line. Davey-Bostic made her first shot, but missed the second, but the Tigers’ Sara Wolbert grabbed the offensive rebound and kicked it out to Hillson for the eventual game-winner. The Lady Hornets fouled to try and get back into the game, but the Tigers held on for the win, giving them the 2015 NTL Division 1 crown.

Prior to the fourth quarter, the game was back-and-forth in favor. Wellsboro got an early lead as senior Jada Jackson scored first, but the Tigers tied it up, then took the lead that they held for the majority of the game. Leading 10-8 after the first, North Penn-Mansfield extended their lead to 19-12 with 1:24 left in the half, but Wellsboro battled back on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 19-17 at halftime.

Both teams were even in the third as they each scored six and the Tigers maintained their two point (25-23) lead into the fourth. Senior Sarah Ingerick kept Wellsboro in the game with four points until Poirier’s three.

Ingerick finished with 11 points, five rebounds, and two assists on the night, while Jackson scored eight and had 13 rebounds. Sophomore Rachael Tuttle scored six points and also grabbed 13 rebounds, Poirier finished with five, and senior Alexa Singer had two, both foul shots.

The JV team ended their season with a 40-19 win over North Penn-Mansfield to finish with a 17-5 record. Freshmen Julia Smith and Emma Poirier each scored 16 in the win.

The loss drops the Lady Hornets’ record to 16-6 on the year. The Lady Hornets are the No. 3 seed in District IV AA playoffs and will host either East Juniata or Loyalsock at a date and time to be determined.
