Hidden Above the Legion: A Lifeline for Local Veterans
Marissa Winder is the founder and director of the Veterans Attic, located upstairs in the Blossburg American Legion. The building was originally built for William B. Wilson, the first U.S. Secretary of Labor, who served from 1913 to 1921. Marissa’s husband, Doug Winder, also a veteran, created the logo for the Veterans Attic.
Marissa is a veteran who understands the importance of serving others who have served. That’s why she stocks the shelves with pantry items such as food and household goods—to support veterans in the area.
The Veterans Attic is a nod both to military life and its second-floor location. The name is inspired by “Airman’s Attics” found on military installations, where service members can access second-hand uniforms and essential items.
If you are a veteran – or know someone who could use some encouragement – please reach out to Marissa at 272-345-0214 or through the Veterans Attic Facebook page. Once you make contact, an appointment will be scheduled for you to come and browse the available items. If stairs are a concern, Marissa is happy to prepare your requested items and bring them out to your car.
