Healthy Summer Fun and Competition

by Sara Vogt - July 9, 2018

Wellsboro Summer Swim Team is a community program sponsored by Wellsboro Parks and Recreation for youths ages five to eighteen. The swimmers who join the team are from many areas of Tioga County, not just the town of Wellsboro. The swim team’s mission is to keep our community youth active by offering some healthy summer fun and competition.

The organizational model for the swim team is a parent board. Those leading the board at this time are Paul Kurtz, Anne Anderegg, Lynne Smith, and Christie Blackwell. They work diligently to ensure an enjoyable experience for the swimmer and their family.

Of course, someone has to lead the swimmers to success, and one of the principal encouragers is their head coach, Angie Cole. She quietly and confidently teaches proper swimming techniques in an atmosphere filled with optimism. Simply put, she tells them you can! All of the other coaches assisting her this summer do the same.

The Wellsboro Swim team belongs to A Greater Susquehanna Valley Aquatics League, a recreational swim team. They have six regular meets during the season. They have already swum three of them, ending up in first place at this time. After they finish the regular season of six, they will finish up summer swimming at the GSVAL Championships at Lock Haven University on July 27th and 28th.

There are over 100 swimmers at this time on the Wellsboro Swim Team. At their last meet with Loyalsock, Home Page Correspondent, Johanna Vogt, had the opportunity to speak with Aidan Fletcher, Hayden Zuchowski, Ian Hoose, Madison and Megan Robbins, and Isla
Twoey. The swimmers expressed many reasons they enjoy swimming on the team. Some of their answers ranged from the challenge of competition, the fun with friends, and endurance building for sports. To hear the different viewpoints of the swimmers aging from eight to fourteen, watch this broadcast.

We will report the team’s progress as the season swims along!

If you would like more information about the team, please visit their website or their Facebook page.
