Groover Appointed Canton Borough Mayor

by Erik Berggren - March 31, 2025

At the end of January, Bradford County Chief Judge Maureen Beirne selected David Groover to fill Canton Borough’s vacant mayoral office. The seat had been empty since September when former mayor Dean Vanderpool — though much-loved by the community — chose to step down due to his personal disagreements with the actions of the borough council.

Home Page Correspondent Samantha Morgan recently met with Groover to learn more about him, his appointment to office, and his plans for the future.

“There’s been a lot of contention around ongoings with the town,” said Groover when asked why he was interested in the position. “I really wanted to try to help foster a better sense of community.”

Groover’s hope for the future involves the continuation, growth, and betterment of the borough police department, which he would like to have “a much more reputable status than it has had in the past.”

“I’d like to make sure our downtown goes through even more of a beautification process, attract more and new businesses into town, do anything we can to help existing businesses grow, and just work hand-in-hand with a lot of the other communities and agencies to do the best that we can here,” Groover continued.

Canton’s mayoral seat will be up for election this fall and, after spending the calendar year holding office, Groover’s name will be on the ballot. The race will be contested, as one other resident has filed paperwork to the election board as of the time of this story.
