Second Chance Animal Sanctuaries provides humane, no-kill sanctuaries for stray or abandoned animals in need. They strive to give each cat or dog the love and care they need to be given a second chance.

Their new Heading Home Center features several indoor rooms, equipped with toys, climbing perches, and access to outdoor, fenced-in yards to provide fresh air and exercise for the animals.

In this feature, Second Chance’s Shelter Manager, Laura Clarson, gives us an official introduction to some adorable animals that you can adopt at Second Chance. Thank you for your desire to help animals in need, and provide a safe, loving home for them!

Laura also reminds us to always spay or neuter our pets to prevent over-population.

In addition, volunteers are always appreciated to cuddle and play with the kittens! Bring the whole family, and stop by during their hours of operation: 12pm-5pm on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday (closed Wednesdays and Saturdays).

As a nonprofit organization, Second Chance is always accepting donations. Currently, their big needs are dry cat food and cleaning supplies. Other accepted donation items include blankets, towels, dry dog food, wood pellet cat litter, toys, etc. You can drop them off at their Heading Home Center, Coles Excavating in Middlebury Center, or at First Citizens Community Bank in Wellsboro.

In addition to donating items, monetary donations are greatly appreciated. Visit their website to donate using the PayPal link. You can also purchase a tile for $10 in memory of a loved one – either a person or a pet – in order to help Second Chance cover the costs of caring for the animals. The tiles are placed on a wall inside the Heading Home Center, and will form a giant paw print once completed. A special thanks to Tim Morey from Main St. Engraving for helping with this project.

Their most recent need for donations involves a 7-year-old beagle mix named Max. He was previously adopted from Second Chance, and was then given to someone else by the adopter. Max was suffering from a broken leg, but unfortunately, the owner never took him to the vet. By the time they brought him back to Second Chance, the leg had healed improperly and it was too late for the vets to help. Now, Max has been on cage rest for three months, and they recently took him to Cornell to discuss the possibilities of surgery. He has been prescribed one additional month of cage rest to see if his leg will heal properly. If it doesn’t, Max will require surgery to fix the fracture. The surgery will cost between $4,500 and $6,000, so any donations would be greatly appreciated. After his healing, Max will be patiently awaiting a loving home!

“It’s the little things that really make a big difference,” Clarson says. “Donating five dollars here and there or even just a bag of cat food – every little bit helps.”

One upcoming event for Second Chance is the Rabies and Shot Clinic at Smythe Park in Mansfield on Saturday, October 21st from 2:00pm-4:00pm. Rabies vaccines for cats and dogs will be $8, and distemper combo shots for cats and dogs will be $15. Previous Rabies certificate is required to receive a 3-year shot.

Additionally, there will be a microchip clinic on Saturday, November 4th from 10:00am-12:00pm at Rockwell’s Feed Store in Wellsboro. The minimum weight required is 4lbs and the cost is $15.
