Doney picks Bloomsburg to continue softball career

North Penn-Liberty senior signs National Letter of Intent

by Ed Weaver, , - December 20, 2018

One of the Northern Tier League’s softball aces is continuing her softball career next year. North Penn-Liberty senior Savannah Doney, just the second student-athlete in school history, signed her National Letter of Intent on Thursday, December 20 to take her game to the next level at Division II Bloomsburg University.

Doney has been one of the NTL’s toughest pitchers the past three seasons. In her three-year career has 84 hits in 197 at-bats (.426) in 61 games played while scoring 69 runs and driving in 49 RBIs with 19 doubles, 8 triples, and 4 home runs. On the mound Doney has a 40-17 record and 1.84 ERA in 60 appearances. She has pitched 52 complete games (12 shutouts) and 389 innings, and has struck out 347 batters while only issuing 62 walks.

Doney is looking forward to getting on campus.

“I’m pretty excited. The fact that I don’t have to be done with softball after this high school season and I can keep playing is pretty awesome,” Doney said.

Doney, who will major in nursing once the fall starts, applied to other schools before deciding on Bloomsburg.

“I applied to Mansfield, Lock Haven, West Chester and Wilkes, but Bloomsburg was the top choice out of all of them,” she said. “Their nursing program is the top in the state and that was a big factor for me. The campus is real close together so I wouldn’t have to run all over the place, and also the hospital where they do clinicals is right across the street.”

Doney is also the first North Penn-Liberty softball player that has signed at the Division II level according to co-head coach Lynn Grinnell.

“We’ve had other players that have gone to college and earned scholarships once they got there, but Savannah is the first one to sign a letter of intent. It takes a lot of work for any position but she’s one of those rarities that can play any position on the field and not drop off in talent.

“We can’t be more proud of her,” Grinnell continued. “We’ve watched her grow up through the years and this is going to be a great and exciting senior year for her. We’re blessed here at North Penn-Liberty to have her here and we’ve seen it with our records. She’s led us to Districts three years in a row and to states. She’s accomplished a lot for herself and for the program here.”
