District IV Track Championship

Five members of the Wellsboro Track and Field team will be heading to Shippensburg University this weekend after qualifying for the PIAA State Track and Field meet at the District IV Class AA Championships at Athens on Saturday, May 16.

Wellsboro Junior Rich Tardieu qualified for states with a 2nd place finish in the triple jump at 42 feet, 4.5 inches along with four members of the Lady Hornet team.

Senior Lauren Bleggi and Juniors Jada Jackson, Lindsey Graver, and Raisa Rogers ran 50.8 seconds in the 4x100m relay, which was good enough for third place on the day to qualify for states.

Jackson also qualified in two individual events with second place finishes in both the long jump and triple jump. Jackson’s long jump was 17 ft, 10.25 in and her triple jump measured 37 ft 7.25 in.

The girls finished 8th overall with 35 team points and the boys came home 14th with 24 points. The Montoursville girls took home the top spot with 82 points, while the Milton boys won with 115 points.

Jackson finished 5th in the 100m (12.73) and Lauren Bleggi was 8th (13.1). Lauren Bleggi came home 7th in the 200m (26.82) and Freshman Anna Bleggi (5:41.28) finished in 6th place in the 1600m run, and Junior Haley Zuchowski finished 8th in the 100m hurdles (17.12) and 14th in the 300m hurdles (50.61).

The 4x800m relay team of Junior Camryn Keane, Seniors Caitlynn Butler and Annie Sweeney, and Anna Bleggi were 10th (10:42.58). Rogers came home in 7th place in the high jump (5 ft), and Junior Mikayla Feil was 14th (4 ft 8 in). Graver finished 11th in the long jump (15 ft 8.5 in) and 15th in the triple jump (31 ft 8.25 in).

For the boys, Senior Michael Pietropola finished 7th in the 100m (11.49) and Tardieu was 16th (11.89), Senior Brieux Thibaut finished 5th in the 200m (23.3), Senior Kieron Smethers was 13th in the 400m (53.95), and Senior Jack Chambers finished in 14th place in the 110m hurdles (17.34) and 7th in the 300m hurdles (42.48).

The 4x100m team of Senior Nick Marple, Smethers, Tardieu, and Pietropola narrowly missed the state qualifying time of 44.31 as they finished in 5th place in 44.8 seconds.

Marple tied for 4th in the high jump (5 ft 10 in), Smethers and Tardieu tied for 13th (5 ft 6 in), and Thibaut added an 11th place finish in the triple jump (39 ft).

Other local area athletes shined on the day, as North Penn’s Bo Burleigh finished 3rd in the javelin (172 ft, 1 in), North Penn’s Reileigh Wilson finished 10th in the pole vault (9 ft), Derek Nybeck came home 9th in the boys pole vault (11 ft 6 in), Alysa Davey-Bostic placed 4th in the triple jump (35 ft 5 in), and the 4×800 team of Brittany Weiskopff, Logan Wilson, Victoria Johnson, and Lyndsey Payne finished in 7th place finish (10:36.03).

Sayre’s Joey Galizia won the boys long jump (21 ft 3.5 in) and also won the triple jump (43 ft 5.25 in). Athens’ Breana Gambrell won the long jump (18 ft 2.75 in) and was 3rd in the triple jump (36 ft 3 in) behind Montoursville’s Kirsten O’Malley (37 ft 10.5 in) and Jackson.
