Decorating Decoded – The Perfect Porch

Your porch is your home's first impression - dress it well!

by Tabitha Dietrich - April 20, 2015

The front porch is iconic to American culture. It can be on a Victorian mansion, a Texas ranch or a country cottage. It can make or break your home’s curb appeal.

Whether you have multiple porches or a small portico, you can create an inviting entry using 3 basic decorating principles that anyone can do. Think of your porch as an extension of your living space and decorate it as you would any other room inside your home. You need to define its purpose, pick a theme and then a focal point.

As always, defining the purpose of a space is critical to beginning any design. For a porch, it can be as simple as being the entry to the house if you have a small portico, or to host al fresco dinner parties if the space allows.

Once you have determined how you will use your porch, you need to choose a theme with which to decorate it. This can be done by choosing a color scheme and/or a particular style. Do you prefer the more formal feel of the Victorian style or the informality of rustic country? Seasonal decorating is also an option. With Memorial, Flag and Independence Days happening in May, June and July, Americana could be your style and red, white and blue your color scheme. The style and colors you choose will help guide you to the types of accessories that you select.

Imagine an eye-popping wreath with pedestal urns overflowing with flowers on either side of the door turning a modest front entry into a bold statement. A traditional porch swing decked out with colorful, comfy pillows could be your focal point. How about a great mirror or piece of artwork hanging on the wall behind a wicker settee? Yes, I said artwork on exterior walls. Why not? Thinking outside the box is how “The WOW Factor” is achieved.

Shopping garage sales, flea markets and even your own basement can lead you to a treasure trove of items that with a little scrubbing or a quick make-over with a can of spray paint will help you create your own vision of that American icon… the front porch.
