Decorating Decoded – The Color Black

Learn a secret from the decorator's bag of tricks!

by Tabitha Dietrich - September 16, 2015

While black is a staple in the fashion industry, it’s not as popular, with the general public, in home interiors. People react negatively, saying it will make things dark and depressing. The opposite is true. It is one of the most important and powerful colors you can use in a room. The reality is a little bit of black is essential in every room because it has a grounding effect that is necessary in every interior.

Its versatility is limitless because it can be used with any style. It can be traditional, country or modern; it can be masculine or feminine; serious, dramatic, fun or even romantic. Black can take a myriad of mismatched elements and pull a room together and solidify a color scheme like nothing else can. That’s why black is a staple in the interior decorator’s bag of tricks. So, how do you use it?

First, think about the effect you want to create and how the finish of that black will contribute to it. Matte blacks will fade into the background while glossy blacks demand attention.

For those who are more timid, start small. Use black as an accent disbursed throughout the room. Maybe some wrought iron candlesticks, black embroidered pillows, a light fixture and some black picture frames.

Feeling bolder, incorporate some statement furniture like a black coffee table, china hutch or 4 poster bed. If everything in the room is light and airy, ground it with a black patterned rug and window drapes. Black trim work and doors are a new trend with neutral walls that gives a very dramatic look.

The really brave of heart can use it as the dominant color for a room, but only if that room has a lot of warm, natural light and you will want to vary the shades, textures and patterns of black that you use. Painting the walls black is also an option and if you do, keep the flooring and other furnishings light and neutral.

Another bonus to using black…everything goes with it. Neutral tones like white, ivory, khaki and gray can work for a formal traditional look to casual country. If you want a more energized or contemporary look, black is bold enough to work with fuchsia, cobalt and bright green or yellow. Throw some metallic into the mix as well. Golds for the traditionalist and polished chrome and silver for the modernist. Pastels mixed with black, soften it and make it romantic. Black will pair with anything to match your style.

As black pants or black shoes are in everyone’s closet, so should a little bit of black be in everyone’s home interior.
