CV edges North Penn-Liberty, 49-40

by Brady Connolly - February 6, 2017

The Cowanesque Valley Indians came into Friday’s game against North-Penn Liberty still searching for their first NTL victory. It was senior night, and the Indians hoped to finish their final home game with a win. North-Penn Liberty arrived in Westfield looking to snap a 6-game losing skid.

Gunnar Rice and Garrett Bickhart connected on an early alley-oop giving the Mounties an early lead. But Caleb Fitzwater responded for the Indians with a three-pointer from the wing. Fitzwater hit another long ball in the quarter to give the Indians an early lead. North-Penn Liberty big man Garrett Bickhart took over the rest of the first quarter, recording 4 more points and making a block at the end of the quarter to preserve a North-Penn Liberty lead 8-6.

The game continued to be a back and forth affair in the second quarter. North-Penn Liberty was able to get to the charity stripe, but could not capitalize when they got there; going 6 for 14 in the quarter. Meanwhile, Seth Hurer led the Indians with 5 of his 7 total points in the quarter. Cowanesque Valley took a lead into the halftime break 18-16.
North-Penn Liberty tied the game early in the third quarter after an off-balanced basket from Brandyn Choplosky. Cowanesque Valley led by as many as 6 points in the third, due to a balanced scoring attack, which included five different players scoring. It looked as though Cowanesque Valley would take a lead into the fourth quarter, until Drake Schmouder drove baseline and scored over two defenders late in the third, to tie the game 28-28.

The two teams traded the lead several times throughout the first 4:00 of the fourth quarter. Garrett Bickhart picked up his fourth foul for the Mounties, forcing him to the bench for several minutes. But Deven Harer stepped in and gave the Mounties a lift, picking up a blocked shot and two jumpers. Choplosky pulled down an offensive rebound and scored to cut the Indians lead to 1 point with 1:30 remaining in the game. That was the closest the Mounties would get, Cowanesque Valley’s balanced scoring effort continued and with the lead late the Mounties were forced to foul. The Indians made their free throws count, coming away victorious 49-40.
