County Rivals Face Off in Epic Showdown!

by Joe Carreon - November 3, 2014

The North Penn-Mansfield Panthers traveled to Wellsboro to face their arch-rival, the Hornets, for the final game of the regular season. This game is one of the marquee matchup’s of the year in the NTL.

The 3rd and 4th Grade football teams were honored at the start of the game. The Hornet seniors, (including players who were in their last regular season game) were also honored.

This was everything you wanted from a football game. It was close for the entire contest. The Panthers led for most of the game by a score of 20-7. Just before halftime, the Hornets’ Levi Mack punched it into the end zone and made the score 20-14, closing the gap to within a one possession game.

In the third quarter Wellsboro took a 21-20 lead on a 15-yard run from Pietropola. North Penn-Mansfield would answer with a Zaparzynski 13-yard run for a touchdown and re-take the lead 26-21.

Wellsboro didn’t give up. Pietropola was able to find Smethers in the corner of the end-zone for the go-ahead and definitive score.

North Penn Mansfield was not able to find the endzone again for the rest of the game and Wellsboro held onto the lead while showcasing the great run game of the Hornets. The Hornets take down the Panthers, 28-26.

The results of this game sets up a great playoff match-up between these two teams this weekend. The Hornets will take on the Panthers in Island Park for a great first round playoff game. If you are looking for something exciting to do this weekend, make sure you get out to this game. It will be a playoff match-up for the ages! A game that no one in Wellsboro, Blossburg, and Mansfield will want to miss!
