Canton & Wellsboro Face Off In Baseball/Softball Opening Day
Baseball and Softball seasons for the Canton Warriors started Friday March 24th as they hosted the Wellsboro Green Hornets. Both teams had their ups and downs, however their starts and finishes went in the complete opposite direction.
The Canton softball team started off slow trailing 2-5 after three innings but was able to rally in the 5th putting 10 runs on the board. They added 2 more in the 6th to enact the mercy rule and secured a 15-5 victory.
Keri Wesneski pitched the entire game for the Warriors, striking out six batters. Madison Hurlbert led all batters with 3 hits, while teammate Taryn Acla had 2. Molly Ward crossed the plate 3 times throughout the game.
The Canton baseball team had double digit hits on the night and looked to have a comfortable lead up 7-3 after 4 innings. In the top of the 5th however, Wellsboro took the lead and never looked back, adding 11 runs to finish the night. The Warriors ended the night with an opening game loss 7-14 at the hands of the Hornets.
Holden Ward was the starting pitcher for the Warriors. Holden pitched the first three innings of the game followed by Hayden Ward, Hudson Ward, Weston Bellows, and Zack Colton. The pitching staff struck out 7 batters but also gave up a dozen walks during the game. Seniors Hayden Ward and Weston Bellows each had 2 hits for Canton.
The Canton Warriors will return to action on Tuesday March 28th when they travel to Wyalusing.
